Change Address on Driving Licence

Process of changing the address stays the same, whether the applicant has a provisional driving licence or a full driving licence.

The process is absolutely free of cost, if there’s any delay with the paperwork at the DVLAs end, the applicant can drive using the old license. However, if the applicant fails to inform the DVLA about the change, a fine of £1,000 has to be paid.

Even if the applicant is planning to move for a few months or going to study at a university, it is advised to apply for the address change if the car is taken along. Applicant must only put a UK address on licence (No foreign addresses).

The applicant needs to sit with the required personal details before applying.

The first step is to have the Government Gateway ID and password, which may be previously used for driving license.

Other documents include:

  • National Insurance number.
  • Passport number.
  • Driving licence or provisional licence.
  • Addresses lived in the last three years.

The applicant can:

  • Send in a recent passport – style photo, a letter will be given to guide how to submit online.
